CHAMPION READING

2021-2022

CHAMPION reading is a reading incentive program that encourages  EWMS students to read outside of assigned reading.  CHAMPION reading utilizes Reading Counts to encourage students to read on their own.   Reading Counts is a program that helps students pick books that are on their reading level and based on their interests.  The main goal of CHAMPION reading is for students to read on their own and reach the ”milestones” at their own pace.  The focus is on the number of words read.  It is not required.

One of our School Wide Goals this year is: EWMS will move from 0 words read to 100 Million words read by April 30th, 2022.  To achieve this goal we will:

  1. Read 30 minutes daily.
  2. Take and Pass 3 reading counts tests each quarter.

Participation in Champion Reading will also allow us to reach our goal.

Below you will find the basic requirements of the program and answers to many of the questions you may have.

Students will spell the word CHAMPION

  • For every checkpoint,125,000 words, the student will receive a letter

125,000 - C

250,000 - H

375, 000 - A

500,000 - M

625,000 - P

  • The start date will be September 7th  and the last day to take a test will be April 16th.

  • Students may get the letters at any time. For example, if they miss having 125,000 words by the end of September they will receive the letter at the time they reach the 125,000 mark.

  • Students must have achieved the letter “M” or at least 500,000 words by the end of the 2nd 9 weeks to participate in the 1,000,000 word reward.

  • Reading Counts test should be taken on all books that a test is provided.

What can I do if there isn't a quiz for the book my student is reading?

  • For other readings the student will provide the Title, Author, Genre and Publisher along with a short summary of the book to receive words read credit. Summaries will be submitted to Mrs. Cook.

  • Student names and letters they have received will be displayed in the hallway in front of the Media Center.

What times of the day can a quiz be taken at school?

Quizzes may be taken at home or at school. Teachers may allow other times on an individual basis.

Why can quizzes only be taken between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.?

These are times set by Scholastic (the company that sponsors Reading Counts).  No one at EWMS has the ability to change these times.
